Health Ministry Lupus workshop
St. John's
Health Ministry Lupus Workshop: Special thanks to Dayo Corley who bravely shared with her parishioners her fight with Lupus. What is lupus? Lupus is a chronic, autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body (skin, joints, and/or organs
inside the body). Chronic means that the signs and symptoms tend to last longer than six weeks and often for many years. In lupus, something goes wrong with your immune system, which is the part of the body that fights off viruses, bacteria,
and germs ("foreign invaders," like the flu). Normally our immune system produces proteins called antibodies that
protect the body from these invaders. Autoimmune means your immune system cannot tell the difference between these foreign
invaders and your body's healthy tissues ("auto" means "self") and creates autoantibodies that attack
and destroy healthy tissue. These autoantibodies cause inflammation, pain, and damage in various parts of the body. Lupus
is also a disease of flares (the symptoms worsen and you feel ill) and remissions (the symptoms improve and you feel better).

St. John's Pentecost (Whitsunday)
Pentecost Sunday @ St. John's Episcopal Church - Sunday, 5/15 Pentecost Sunday is one of
the most ancient feasts of the Church, celebrated early enough to be mentioned in the Acts of the Apostles (20:16) and St.
Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians (16:8). It is the 50th day after Easter (if we count both Easter and Pentecost),
and it supplants the Jewish feast of Pentecost, which took place 50 days after the Passover and which celebrated the sealing
of the Old Covenant on Mount Sinai. Why wear red on Pentecost Sunday? Red is the liturgical color for this day. Red recalls
the tongues of flame in which the Holy Spirit descended on the first Pentecost. The color red also reminds us of the blood
of the martyrs. These are the believers of every generation who by the power of the Holy Spirit hold firm to the true faith
even at the cost of their lives. So in keeping with tradition St. Episcopal Church congregation wore red on Pentecost Sunday,

151st Diocesan Convention 2017
The annual diocesan convention is the ultimate organizational decision-making
body comprised of clergy and lay members. Convention meets annually for two days in November. Each year, representatives from
around our diocese gather to review and discuss issues, policies and structures. Convention delegates decide the diocesan
budget (based on recommendations from Diocesan Council), elect members of the diocese's various administrative, executive
and judicial bodies and vote on any resolutions-including those that amend or add to the Constitution or Canons-that may be
brought before it. When necessary, they elect the Bishop, Assisting Bishop or Coadjutor and Bishop(s) Suffragan. St. John's
was represented by Elected Delegate, Carol Moore; Alternate, Patricia Hamlet. Our elected Youth Delegates were Angie
Doivilus and Ifeanyi Igbanugo. Youth Delegates to the convention are a unique voice and are a vital part of the life
of the diocese, especially in their vision for the future of Youth Ministry. CLICK HERE TO VIEW MORE PICTURES

Black History Month Celebration
St. John's Youth Group kicked off our Black History Month Celebration on Sunday, 2/5/2017. "If
a race has no history, it has no worthwhile tradition, it becomes a negligible factor in the thought of the world, and it
stands in danger of being exterminated. The American Indian left no continuous record. He did not appreciate the value of
tradition; and where is he today? The Hebrew keenly appreciated the value of tradition, as is attested by the Bible itself.
In spite of worldwide persecution, therefore, he is a great factor in our civilization." by Carter G. Woodson

Bishop
Provenzano Issues Pastoral Letter
Dear Sisters and Brothers, I greet you in the name of Jesus
Christ, the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. As we begin this new liturgical year, I
write to you as your bishop: the chief priest, pastor, and teacher of the Diocese, to set in motion the essential work of
Racial Justice and Reconciliation in your parish church, your home and your neighborhood. For each of us, the issues surrounding
racial justice are real. No one can say 'these issues do not affect me,' or 'there are no issues in our particular
church community or neighborhood.' Living in this diocese, issues of race and racial justice, and the need for reconciliation,
affect us all - this is New York, a great melting pot of culture, language, race and religion. And, therefore, a great pressure
cooker for the issues associated with such a diversity. Continued...

an engraved Stylus Pen and engraved Tote Bag as a welcoming gift to show of our appreciation that they chose our Church to
worship Christ. Acts 10:23 - "So he invited them in and gave them lodging. And on the next day he
got up and went away with them, and some of the brethren from Joppa accompanied him" CLICK HERE FOR MORE PICTURES
On Sunday, November 27th, The Rev. Canon Jerrick F. Rayside held
a healing service. Prayers and anointment for the healing of the body, mind and spirit was offered. The Service of Healing
utilizes an ancient rite of the church: laying on of hands and anointing with oil for healing. Prayers and anointing may be
for the person present or as an intention for someone else. "Psalm 107:19-21: Then they cried to the LORD in their
trouble, and he saved them from their distress. He sent forth his word and healed them; he rescued them from the grave. Let
them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for men."

CELEBRATE LENT
So we, who are many, are one body in Christ, and individually
we are members one of another - Romans 12:5 Few passages from scripture describe
better the ethos of Episcopal Relief & Development than Paul's Letter to the Romans. It takes all of us, working together
as one body in Christ, to heal a hurting world. This was brought home to me vividly during a program visit I made to Myanmar
in February of last year. I had the honor of visiting a demonstration farm where about thirty students who had come from
around the country were sitting in rapt attention under a shed listening to elderly men and women share their expertise in
soil and crop management and animal husbandry. Their teachers were passing along knowledge that had been lost during
Myanmar's dark years of civil and political unrest. The teachers were sharing how to rotate crops, how to use natural
pesticides and fertilizers and how to breed animals. This knowledge that had been lost was being recovered and passed
along for the glory of God. As one body in Christ, all of us have a role to play, just as the elderly teachers in Myanmar,
in healing a hurting world. What role will you play this Lent? -Robert W. Radtke

Harvest
Sunday Celebration
Diocesan
Altar Guild Annual Meeting
St. John's had the honor of hosting the annual Diocesan Altar Guild Meeting on Saturday, October
25th at 10 AM EST. The event started off with a 10 am Mass and then the altar guild members representing the various Episcopalian
churches in NYC met in our undercroft for lunch and a brief meeting. Our special guest was Father Byrne of All Saints in Bayside,
Queens. Father Byrne gave a brief lecture on the various liturgical colors of the Church season and liturgical colors of the
Burse and Chalice Veil associated with the seasons. Burse: The square pocket or purse that is made to contain the corporal,
post-Communion veil and puriflcators. It is placed over the veiled Chalice and Paten on the Altar before and after the celebration
of the Holy Communion. Additionally, it is a cover consisting of two squares of stiffened material in which the corporal is
kept. Its liturgical use in the Eucharist has been general only since the 17th century. In earlier times the corporal was
kept either in the missal or in some form of a box or bag. Thanks to everyone who turned out to support this event. CLICK HERE For Pictures
